Female Victim Stabbed in Birmingham Bus Stop Attack Dies
The female victim stabbed repeatedly in the neck in an unprovoked attack at a bus stop in Birmingham has passed away, police have confirmed.
The victim, who was 34, came under attack on Smallbrook Queensway street, just outside Bullring shopping complex, shortly before 21:00 GMT Friday evening, according to police statements.
Djeison Rafael, twenty-one, appeared before Birmingham court on Monday, facing charges for the violent incident.
He was previously accused of attempted murder however after the victim's passing the charge has been updated to include murder.
Law Enforcement Actions
The force said officers would be in the downtown area on Monday providing public assurance, while detectives assisted the woman's family.
Investigators are requesting any eyewitnesses who may have seen Mr Rafael, identified as a Black British national, and is believed to have been wearing grey athletic wear, dark headwear, athletic shoes with a backpack.
Attack Site Details
The stabbing happened outside the Bullring shopping centre, opposite the main entrance of New Street railway station.
Police said they were treating it as a random violent act with investigators stating efforts continue to determine why it happened.
Eyewitness Reports
An area worker, who works nearby, recounted the emergency response after completing her work period around 10 PM Friday night.
She characterized the location as extremely disorderly, adding that co-workers reported hearing loud disturbances at about 21:00.
"A lot of co-workers use transit services, ride the tramline... our security is compromised fundamentally, here in the city centre."
Ashley Birks, twenty-five, resident of Stoke, mentioned visiting the city quite frequently to see his girlfriend resident there, expressing concern regarding the incident.
"It makes me worried for my girlfriend," he said.
"She doesn't drive and works at major concert locations... considering something completely unprovoked [happened], you know, it's horrible."
